Dear Jane

The Jane Stickle Quilt – Block J12

Block J12 is a combination of foundation piecing and appliqué or curved piecing.  I cannot tell if Jane curve pieced or appliquéd the basket handle. Being a glutton for punishment, I decided to give curved piecing a shot. 😉

So…for the Moda grunge version, I curve pieced. I succeeded but decided to definitely go with appliqué for my Blueberry Park version. Frankly, it was just easier. I will continue to work on curve piecing but, as of today, I can definitely state it is still one of my least favorite things to do. 🙁

I’ve included templates for both.

Note: Unit A and Unit B in the pattern are for the sashing. I chose to make 5-inch blocks like the original rather than sash 4½-inch blocks. If you prefer to add your sashing when your blocks are all finished, just eliminate the A and B units from my pattern. The center sections will then be 4½ inches finished in size and you can add your sashing later.
