Blue Bayou: Panel 1 with Sashing

I’ve finished attaching the sashing strip to Panel 1. Sunny, of course, had to inspect my work…you’ll see him frequently. It’s actually quite amazing he’s taken this long to show up in this project. I swear he has a camera radar attached to his body.

So far, I’ve got two mistakes I’ve had to get creative with:

The first is the fourth square is only 32 rows high (the Old Maid’s Puzzle). I corrected this mistake by making the sashing strip 32 rows high at the same point. I decided to do this rather than trying to ease 4 rows into that section when sewing the panels together as I think it would definitely be noticeable.

The second I discovered when I was attaching the stashing strip. One of my sashing sections is only 9 rows high instead of 10. In this case, I eased in the extra row when sewing together. One missing row is noticeable only if you are looking for it. In fact, now that I’ve pointed it out, you should be able to see it when viewing the lightbox image.

According to quilting legend,  a humility square is an intentionally flawed square on a quilt  the Amish included to teach the quilter humility. This is actually folklore but I can attest that every quilt I’ve made has a square somewhere within it that is not quite right. In my case, they are never intentional, but the result is the same…I’m humbled. So I’ll make the fourth block of my first panel my humility square …
