Quilt of Valor 2014 – Disappearing Hourglass
As soon as I saw Missouri Star Quilt’s Disappearing Hourglass video, I knew I had to try this pattern. However, the next time around I will make half square triangles using the traditional method. I did not like working with the outer edges on the bias. As quick as Jenny’s method is, you have to be very careful when pressing not to stretch. I was very concerned about the rippling once I had attached the borders. The pattern itself is fabulous…it was a natural for my first Quilt of Valor.
Thank goodness for spray basting. It smoothed out the top for quilting and all ended well. And yes, that’s Chloe in the background supervising my progress. She’s very good about not walking on the quilt when I’m laying it out.
I usually doodle quilt my quilts. But since this quilt is more traditional in nature I decided to stencil feather wreaths on each of the blocks and quilt feather vines in the border. It turned out nice. I tried not to get heavy-handed with my quilting ( a problem for me as I love to fill in everywhere) as I wanted it to be soft and cuddly.
This weekend I washed, made my presentation case, and added the label. Time to send it on.
11/24/14 update: Since I plan to make another QOV early next year from this pattern, I’ve written a cutting redesign pattern to eliminate working with the bias edges: Disappearing Hour Glass
