The Jane Stickle Quilt – Block L1
Block L1 is foundation pieced. I debated using traditional piecing but opted for foundation piecing for two reasons. First, the outer strips in two corners are rather small. And second, most of the measurements involve eighths of an inch. I use Creative Grids rulers and I love the accuracy of those rulers and the clear markings for eighths of an inch. But I recognize not everyone uses those rulers and there is a general phobia about cutting using ⅛ markings. So…foundation piecing it is. 🙂
Once that decision was made and with only four sections, the block is easy to piece and assemble.

Note: Unit A and Unit B in the pattern are for the sashing. I chose to make 5-inch blocks like the original rather than sash 4½-inch blocks. If you prefer to add your sashing when your blocks are all finished, just eliminate the A and B units from my pattern. The center sections will then be 4½ inches finished in size and you can add your sashing later.
