The Jane Stickle Quilt – Block K2
Block K2 is traditionally pieced…an easy decision because I chose to take advantage of strip piecing. No way did I want to foundation piece 36 little squares and then have to rip the paper off the back. As I studied Jane’s quilt, it is clear she made this block proportionally smaller than K1. So there is additional background fabric surrounding the 36 squares in the center. I also played with two foreground colors in my Moda Grunge version.
My pattern suggests strip lengths for the Unit E strips. However, you can make these lengths whatever length you determine is necessary to come up with the 18 Unit E pairs. The fat quarter I used required me to cut several more shorter lengths to accomplish this. If you are using one foreground fabric you could also attach six strips together and then cut rows instead of pairs as indicated in the pattern.

Note: Unit A and Unit B in the pattern are for the sashing. I chose to make 5-inch blocks like the original rather than sash 4½-inch blocks. If you prefer to add your sashing when your blocks are all finished, just eliminate the A and B units from my pattern. The center sections will then be 4½ inches finished in size and you can add your sashing later.
