Dear Jane

The Jane Stickle Quilt – Block G3

Block G3 is an appliqué baby.

When I set out to design this one in Electric Quilt 8, it turned out to be a lot easier than I thought. EQ has a rounded rectangle tool that made creation of the ring quite easy. What wasn’t so easy was getting EQ to understand that it was, in fact, a “ring” for appliqué purposes. No matter what I tried, it decided I was layering rectangles and would not create an inner seam allowance. So…I decided to trick it by dividing it in half. By adding those two seams, it finally recognized it as a ring. To avoid having to actually “sew” the two halves together to form the ring, I just overlapped the two template halves together at the seam lines. Take that EQ! 😉

Note: Unit A and Unit B in the pattern are for the sashing. I chose to make 5-inch blocks like the original rather than sash 4½-inch blocks. If you prefer to add your sashing when your blocks are all finished, just eliminate the A and B units from my pattern. The center sections will then be 4½ inches finished in size and you can add your sashing later.
