The Jane Stickle Quilt – Block G11
Block G11 uses a combination of traditional and foundation piecing. It is somewhat difficult to determine whether Jane pieced or appliquéd the diamond sections. One clearly looks pieced and the other three look like they were appliquéd. I decided to foundation piece the four diamond sections and then assemble the nine-patch using traditional piecing. Once I had the diamond sections done, I removed the paper before I assembled the remainder of the block.
If you prefer to appliqué the diamonds to the background, simply substitute 1¾” x 2½” rectangles for the background and use the Unit G diamond template in the hand piecing section. You might consider cutting the background slightly larger and then cutting to exact dimensions after you have appliquéd the diamonds.

Note: Unit A and Unit B in the pattern are for the sashing. I chose to make 5-inch blocks like the original rather than sash 4½-inch blocks. If you prefer to add your sashing when your blocks are all finished, just eliminate the A and B units from my pattern. The center sections will then be 4½ inches finished in size and you can add your sashing later.
