The Jane Stickle Quilt – Block E2
Block E2 is a combination of traditional piecing and appliqué. When doing appliqué, I cut my background unit (Unit E) larger than necessary, appliqué the patches (Units F, G, H) to it, and then trim it to the exact size needed before adding the rest of the patches to the unit. The measurements listed for Unit C and Unit D, which are traditionally pieced, are the exact sizes needed to for the block.
For some strange reason, Electric Quilt also included a combination template for the appliqué pieces. So I’ve included it as a placement template for those who might find it helpful for placing Units F, G, and H onto the background patch. You’ll find it in the hand piecing template section.
Since I’m doing fusible appliqué, I decided to splice one of the melon patches to reduce the number of layers. You certainly have the option of crisscrossing two Unit F rather than working with the three pieces I’ve provided.

Note: Unit A and Unit B in the pattern are for the sashing. I chose to make 5-inch blocks like the original rather than sash 4½-inch blocks. If you prefer to add your sashing when your blocks are all finished, just eliminate the A and B units from my pattern. The center sections will then be 4½ inches finished in size and you can add your sashing later.
