The Jane Stickle Quilt – Block D1
It is really difficult to determine if Jane appliquéd the spokes to her directional background fabric for this block. Given how narrow the spokes are, I decided in favor of foundation piecing. When I first set up the templates I was hoping to accomplish this with four sections. Alas, I discovered this created an issue when joining the diagonal spokes to the templates as there is an offset seam with the horizontal spokes where they join in the center. I saved my first block by doing some folding, pressing, and hand stitching to fix that tiny section. Then I returned to the template design board before proceeding to my second block.
The redesign increased the sections from four to nine, but resulted in a much smoother build. In spite of those additional seams, the second time around went together faster as I eliminated the hand sewing. I’m not too fond of the additional seams and sections needed but I think the look of the block overall is a cute one.

Note: Unit A and Unit B in the pattern are for the sashing. I chose to make 5-inch blocks like the original rather than sash 4½-inch blocks. If you prefer to add your sashing when your blocks are all finished, just eliminate the A and B units from my pattern. The center sections will then be 4½ inches finished in size and you can add your sashing later.
