The Jane Stickle Quilt – Block C5
I struggled a bit with this block….not because it was difficult so much as I couldn’t decide how I wanted to do it. I initially thought I would foundation piece the sections, remove the paper and then do curved piecing. It was a total bust when I tried it out. I could not get those tiny curves sewn together without puckers and ripping out destroyed the pieces. Back to the drawing board. I have, however, included the templates for curved foundation piecing for the adventuresome. 😉
Next I appliquéd the center circle and then the background corners. Circle went fine but when I appliquéd the corners to create the outer corner affect, I was disappointed in how the foreground colors peaked through. As you can see, it totally ruined the look of the block. Note to self: don’t appliqué background to foreground when you truly want it to be background. Oops. However, it might work with needle-turn appliqué if you are able to trim away the back layer afterwords.
So, in the end, I opted to appliqué in layers…it’s not quite the same affect as Jane’s block but at this point, close enough for me.

Note: Unit A and Unit B in the pattern are for the sashing. I chose to make 5-inch blocks like the original rather than sash 4½-inch blocks. If you prefer to add your sashing when your blocks are all finished, just eliminate the A and B units from my pattern. The center sections will then be 4½ inches finished in size and you can add your sashing later.
