The Jane Stickle Quilt – Block C2
I wrestled somewhat with the design of this block. When I look at the image of the original block, it appears Jane appliquéd the two outer diamonds. In addition, she divided the outer background fabric so the seams met diagonally on the outer corners. Her block required inset seams and appliqué. I decided to simplify for machine piecing by incorporating the two outer diamonds into the foundation piecing pattern. By staggering the seams for those outer diamonds, I also eliminate the inset seams. I’ve included an alternate template for those who wish to appliqué the outer diamonds and incorporate the corner seams as originally done by Jane.
And a caution, pay attention to the diamond seams on the inner design when pressing. If you examine my finished blocks, you’ll see I made that mistake on both blocks. I didn’t pay close enough attention to the angle when I pressed the fabric open. Unfortunately, I didn’t catch it until after I joined the foundation sections. Sigh….one of many humility squares as I continue this challenge. I am choosing to believe they add to the charm of the quilts….after all Jane’s squares aren’t perfect either? So that’s my rationalization for not redoing both blocks. 😉

Note: Unit A and Unit B in the pattern are for the sashing. I chose to make 5-inch blocks like the original rather than sash 4½-inch blocks. If you prefer to add your sashing when your blocks are all finished, just eliminate the A and B units from my pattern. The center sections will then be 4½ inches finished in size and you can add your sashing later.
