Wow! It really works as advertised!

How’s that for getting to the bottom line? I’ve lost track of how many spam-filter plug-ins for WordPress I’ve tried. Spam Free WordPress is the first one that works every time. I’m THRILLED!

WP to Twitter

I’ve been using TwitterTools for several years now to update my Twitter account when I post to my website. Although it is reliable, I’ve been unhappy with the ability to customize post by post. This morning I’ve found a new Plugin, WP to Twitter that I hope will accomplish this.

The first test ran as advertised. I was able to type in a custom tweet at the bottom of the page. I chose not to use the supplied shortcodes. I do however want to include a link to my blog…

Second test ran as advertised. I edited this post to include results of first test and a star rating for the plugin. I left the tweet box blank. It did not tweet the update as instructed in the defaults setup.

My last test is to add the final custom post information I want to tweet with a tiny url link. I changed the default setup to allow edit updates but left default information blank.

Feedburner Feedsmith Plug-in Category Fix

Feedburner WP plugin Category Fix enhances the original plugin to automatically redirect category feeds to the appropriate Feedburner feed. If you are using WordPress as a CMS and have a lot of sub categories, it’s a bit cumbersome to set up initially. Also, the plug-in has not been renamed (should be) to differentiate between the fix and the original plugin. I would recommend deactivating the original version and uninstalling it before installing this one to eliminate confusion. Needless to say, you need to use category permalinks for this to work.

To me, the cleanest way to solve this problem is still via htaccess but in my case, it caused timeout errors which I suspect has more to do with the host server than feedburner. But I’ll give this a shot for awhile and let you know if I have any issues.

Web designer Elliot Jay Stocks offers a free WordPress theme that has been stripped of all styling for those who wish to design their own theme from scratch. I plan to use this baby with my next design. Aaaah yes, no more sifting through pages of WordPress’s default theme stylesheet to make alterations.

Miniposts

Miniposts is a great little miscellaneous plug-in that’s growing on me. It allows you to add posts to your sidebar. With a little modification, I eliminated it from my category navigation (up above and in the sidebar topics tab). I’m currently using it in the right sidebar for What I’m Reading Now.

Reveal IDs for WP Admin

There are times it is helpful to know the IDs assigned by WordPress for categories, posts, pages, etc. Reveal IDs for WP Admin does the job nicely. Once the plug-in is installed, you can see the id assigned on each major admin page (posts, categories, media, etc.). I use it to exclude specific categories from my navigation menu.

Intense Debate

I’m currently trying out IntenseDebate to see what the hoopla is all about. It integrates with WordPress and syncs between the two. Comments are saved on both systems so that if you change your mind, you still have your blog comments.

For the commentors, it’s kinda cool. If they establish an account with IntenseDebate, their profile follows them around. They do not have to reregister when they are commenting on another IntenseDebate site.

So far, it’s been seamless. I’ve had a couple of comments posted to the site without the need of moderation as the commentor already had an established record with IntenseDebate. That was nice. As of right now, the plan is to keep going with it unless I see a noticeble slowdown on my site.

Although WordPress Codex offers the most complete descriptions of tags in WordPress, cruising the terms is a cumbersome process. I ran across two nifty cheat sheets for the more common tags:
