Finally!

Finally! I’ve finished hand quilting my sampler quilt. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve set it aside but I do know it’s been a couple of years since I started it. Feels good.

The final border has been added and I completed the hand basting this morning. The basting took a bit longer than I’d anticipated but was worth it. Against my better judgement (time constraint wise), I’ve decided to hand quilt it. I found a traditional loft polyester batting I really like. Usually I use the low loft polyester when hand quilting but I like this much better…definitely easier than a cotton batting.

Kaleidoscope Star Wall Hanging

I finally finished this baby. This is my first major hand quilting project and I learned a lot…. I learned I do better without a frame or hoop. I learned I most definitely need a thimble and there are many many different kinds. I learned quilting threads differ in quality and most definitely make a difference. I learned, given enough practice, I can handle those way too tiny quilting needles. I learned an up-to-date eye exam and new glasses goes a long way towards not swearing while trying to thread those way too tiny needles. And, last but not least, I learned I enjoy hand quilting!

Sudoku Quilt

I finally got around to doing a Sudoku quilt, which has been on my list for a couple of years. This will be a wall hanging with a finished size of 24 x 24. It is roughly based on McCall’s Quick Quilts version. I reduced the size, spiffed up the sashing, and increased the proportion of the border. Here you see it basted and marked with symbols for each of the squares. I plan to hand quilt.

I’ve added the final border to the quilt and hand basted using Sharon Schamber’s hand-basting technique. This baby is now relegated to my PIP (projects in progress) pile until I finish the matching afghan. I’ll be machine quilting but have not yet decided on the patterns…am leaning towards individual block patterns since this is a sampler…
